Cathedral Basilica of St John the Baptist
Fire Alarm And Life Safety
Georgia
Built in the 1870s, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist serves as the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah. In recognition of its historical significance and architectural grandeur, the Cathedral was designated a Minor Basilica in 2020 by His Holiness Pope Francis, joining the ranks of only 18 cathedrals in the United States with this prestigious title.
The Cathedral did not have a fire sprinkler system and was in need of a fast-responding fire detection system. Recognizing the challenges posed by the Cathedral’s ornate construction and historical importance, JSC Systems collaborated closely with the owner and City Fire Officials to design, furnish, and install a custom, state-of-the-art fire alarm system. This included the installation of air-sampling smoke detection in the attic spaces above the sanctuary, ensuring early detection of potential fire hazards. Furthermore, alternative occupant notification methods were implemented, further ensuring the safety of worshippers and preserving the Cathedral’s architectural integrity.
