What a nurse call system covers
A nurse call system is a clinical workflow tool that happens to run on low-voltage cabling. It covers patient stations and pull cords, bathroom and shower emergency stations, code blue and staff assist, dome lights and corridor annunciation, staff duty assignment and escalation rules, reporting on response times, and increasingly integration with phones, badges, pagers and the electronic record. JSC Systems designs, installs and maintains these systems in acute care hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and assisted living.
Standards, licensing and compliance
Nurse call equipment used in hospitals is covered by UL 1069, the standard for hospital signaling and nurse call equipment, and the installation has to satisfy the healthcare facility codes adopted in the state along with the requirements of the licensing and accreditation bodies that inspect the building. Response-time reporting is often what those inspections actually look at.
- Systems installed to the manufacturer listing and the healthcare codes adopted locally
- Escalation and duty assignment configured with clinical staff, not set to a factory default
- Reporting configured so response times can be evidenced rather than estimated
- Licensed low-voltage contractor in Florida (EF20000375), Georgia (LVU405422), South Carolina (FAC13409 and BAC13521), North Carolina (29986-SP-FA/LV) and Alabama (A-0479)
- Coordination with fire alarm, intercom and security so one facility team supports one integrated estate
Common questions
Can we phase an upgrade without closing wards?
Yes, and on an operating hospital you have to. The usual approach is wing by wing or floor by floor, with the old and new systems running in parallel on the boundary and cutovers scheduled against the ward’s own quiet periods. Rooms come back into service the same day.
Will it integrate with our phones and the electronic record?
Most current platforms send calls to Wi-Fi handsets, smartphones or badges and can pass events to middleware and clinical systems. What is possible depends on your platform and your interface licences, so we confirm the integration path in writing before anything is ordered.
Can it be wireless?
Partly. Wireless pendants, pull cords and staff badges are common and are the practical answer in older buildings and in assisted living where running cable to every room is disruptive. Fixed patient stations in acute care are usually still wired for supervision and reliability. See wireless nurse call systems.
How do we prove response times to inspectors?
Through the system’s own reporting. Calls, acknowledgements and clear-downs are logged with timestamps, so average and outlier response times can be reported by unit and by shift. That reporting is only useful if the duty assignment reflects how the unit really staffs, which is why configuration is a clinical conversation rather than a technical one.
Do you support systems you did not install?
Yes. Much of our healthcare work is service and expansion on existing platforms, starting with a survey of the head-end, the device inventory and the current configuration. See hospital nurse call systems.
