What an integrated security system covers

Physical security is rarely one product. A working system combines IP video surveillance, access control at doors, gates and elevators, intrusion detection, and the network and storage that hold it all together, with one interface for the people who have to operate it. Standards, licensing and compliance

Security work is licensed at state level and inspected against the codes that govern egress, life safety and, for government work, the handling of protected areas. The two constraints owners underestimate are that access control must never prevent egress in an alarm condition, and that video retention has to match whatever policy or regulation applies to the site.

Common questions

Should we put video and access control on the corporate network or a separate one?

Usually a separate VLAN, sometimes a physically separate network. Cameras generate sustained traffic and are a known attack surface, so segmenting them protects both the business network and the evidence. The decision belongs to your IT team as much as to security, which is why we bring both into the design conversation early. See security system integration.

How much video storage do we actually need?

It is a function of camera count, resolution, frame rate, compression and the retention period you are required or choose to keep. Thirty days is a common target, but a site with a regulatory or insurance requirement may need more. We size storage from the real camera list rather than a rule of thumb, and we would rather tell you the number is higher than you expected before purchase than after.

Can you integrate the systems we already have?

Often yes. Where existing panels, readers or cameras are on supported platforms we integrate them; where they are end-of-life or closed, we will say so rather than build a workaround that becomes your problem later. A site survey settles it.

What does biometric access control add over cards?

A credential you cannot lend, lose or clone. It matters most on a small number of high-consequence doors — server rooms, evidence stores, pharmacy, controlled areas — rather than on every opening. Most designs are cards or mobile credentials across the site with biometric access control on the few doors that justify it.

Can one team monitor several buildings or campuses?

Yes, and that is where the design effort pays off: consistent naming, consistent hardware, one credential database and one video platform, so an operator moving between sites is looking at the same thing. It also makes support cheaper, because there is one system to know instead of five.
